The left-hero rule is the biggest reason people lose damage in Bear Hunt. Here is what it is, the 4-slot rule, generation-based picks, and common mistakes.

Want to test yours first?
Open the Left-Hero CheckerWhen you join a rally, only the first expedition skill of the hero in your leftmost slot becomes a buff candidate for the whole rally. The 2nd/3rd heroes, and hero level/gear/stars, do not affect bear damage. If your left hero's skill does not work on the bear, your joiner buff is zero.
To lock slots in your alliance, send four Lv5-skill members in first.
Same-type skills add; different types multiply. Four +25% DMG sum to +100% (2.0x). But two +25% DMG and two +25% ATK give 1.5x1.5 = 2.25x, about 12% more at the same skill level. Spread DMG / ATK / Lethality / proc skills.
An often-missed bucket is enemy defense down (first skill of Hendrik, Ligeia, Estrella and Eleanor: enemy DEF -25%). It multiplies with DMG, ATK and Lethality alike, and this site counts it as x1.25 per slot. The more attack or damage buffs the leader already carries, the more one DEF-down joiner beats a fourth attack joiner. If the leader already has DEF-down (e.g. Eleanor), it adds within the same bucket and gains less.
Even with many joiners, only the top 4 slots of "left hero first expedition skill" apply as buffs. Per community explanations, these 4 aren't fully random — higher skill levels are prioritized across all joiners. So for the same skill, a Lv5 player is picked over a Lv1 one.
This is why "don't early-join with a Lv1 hero" is repeated. With only 4 slots, filling one with a low-level skill steals a slot that could have held a stronger buff, lowering the alliance's total. The rule: level your left hero to Lv5 before joining.
What works on the bear are skills that raise damage/attack/lethality, plus skills that lower enemy defense or raise enemy damage taken. Among easily-obtained permanent heroes, the +25% damage types like Jessie, Jasser, Seo-yoon are staples. Level them to Lv5 and place them on the left to function well as rally buffs. For spenders, each generation's damage/attack/lethality skill holders are candidates, along with the DEF -25% heroes Hendrik (Gen 8), Ligeia (Gen 12), Estrella (Gen 15) and Eleanor (Gen 17), but the first step is fixing a hero "whose skill works on the bear" on your left. The Left-Hero Checker instantly tells you whether your heroes work on the bear.
